Nurse Mentor Updates
We are working with local universities to increase the allocation of student nurses to GP practices within Bromley. Practice placements are a valuable part of the pre-registration nursing course. They provide the student with opportunities to work with a qualified mentor enabling them to reach the required levels in learning outcomes and competencies.
The mentor session provides a yearly update for qualified nurses who have previously successfully completed an NMC approved mentor preparation programme and are on the Bromley mentor register. It is led by a Link lecturer from the University of Greenwich who is able to provide an educational update on the NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) current standards, evaluate the relevance of the student’s Practice Assessment Document and discuss any relevant questions.
The session is also extended to provide an opportunity for those nurses who are required to complete a Mapping tool to the NMC eight domains of learning and mentor outcomes. This tool can be used to demonstrate how a previously obtained mentor qualification and subsequent experience can be mapped against the current mentor standards.
Once Bromley nurses have an up to date mentor qualification the HEI (Health Education Institute) can map pre-registration students to their GP practice. This enables practices to have a role in workforce development and education, raises the profile of General Practice Nursing and impacts positively on the whole team.
